“The purpose of meditation is to make the mind calm and peaceful. When the turbulence of distracting thoughts subsides and the mind becomes still, a deep happiness and contentment arises naturally from within.”
Quite simply, the purpose of meditation is to cultivate those states of mind that are conducive to peace and well-being, and to eradicate those that are not. Happiness is a state of mind, therefore the real source of happines lies in the mind, not in external situations. When our mind is peaceful we are free from worries and mental discomfort, and we experience true happiness.
Directly or indirectly, worldly pleasures can cause us mental and physical suffering by stimulating attachment, jealousy, frustration and so on. Moreover, seeking to fulfill our own desires often bring us into conflict with others.
Where to Find Happiness If true fulfillment cannot be found in worldly pleasures, then where can it be found?
If our mind is not peaceful, we will never find happiness, no matter how much we try to change our external conditions. Therefore, the method to make our mind pure and peaceful is to train in meditation.
No matter how we view our life, we all want to be happy and free from suffering and unhappiness. Meditation gives us practical tools to achieve this by improving our understanding and control of our mind.
